Anew production of Tannhäuser, which was premiered on 26 July 2019 and presented the Bayreuth debut of conductor Valery Gergiev, as well as the house debut of young soprano star Lise Davidsen. Tobias Kratzer’s staging presented Tannhäuser as a wildly contemporary parable of art and freedom which was praised as “novel” and “wrenching” (New York Times) and received exceptional press acclaim. hey were joined by mezzo soprano Elena Zhidkova’s Venus (“scene stealing”, according to Opera Today), baritone Markus Eiche’s Wolfram and Stephen Milling’s Landgraf.

A ghost and a French marquis wander through the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, encountering scenes from many different periods of its history.

La Bayadère is a three-act ballet by the French choreographer Marius Petipa. Set in 19th-century India, La Bayadère tells the sad love story of the noble warrior Solor and his Nikiya, a temple dancer or 'bayadère', who is poisoned by her rival, Gamzatti. This production of the ballet features the revised choreography by Vladimir Ponomarev and Vakhtang Chabukiani (1941), and includes dances by Konstantin Sergeyev and Nikolai Zubkovsky. The ballet’s music, composed by Ludwig Minkus, is performed by the Mariinsky Orchestra under the direction of Boris Gruzin. Among the performers are Viktoria Tereshkina, Anastasia Matvienko, Vladimir Shklyarov, and Vladimir Ponomarev. This performance was recorded at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in July 2014.

Following celebrated productions of Prokofiev's 'Semyon Kotko' and Shchedrin's 'The Left-Hander', Valery Gergiev continues his survey of uniquely Russian works with 'The Golden Cockerel', Rimsky-Korsakov s final and, arguably, most mysterious opera. This vibrant new production mixes live action with CGI, and is the vision of Anna Matison, an acclaimed playwright, script-writer, film director and producer. 'The Golden Cockerel' was Matison s directorial debut with the Mariinsky, and saw her also take on the roles of production and costume designer. The melodious nature, beauty and leitmotifs of the plot are underscored by the production designs; the opera uses pantomime and masquerades, while the sets utilised 3D video projections.

During a Christmas Eve party and a young girl, Clara, being given a nutcracker doll by her godfather, Drosselmeyer. Later in the evening when Clara sleeps, she finds herself in the midst of the Nutcracker’s battle against the Mouse King and his army of mice. Coming to Clara’s aid, the Nutcracker is transformed into a Prince and journeys with her to an enchanted island where spectacular celebrations are held in their honor. Pre-recorded at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in December 2011, Wassili Vainonen’s version of the beloved holiday ballet is for the first time in 3-D in select theaters.

The opera is based on the Biblical tale of Samson and Delilah found in Chapter 16 of the Book of Judges in the Old Testament. It is the only opera by Saint-Saëns that is regularly performed. The second act love scene in Delilah's tent is one of the set pieces that define French opera. Two of Delilah's arias are particularly well known: "Printemps qui commence" and "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix", the latter of which is one of the most popular recital pieces in the mezzo-soprano/contralto repertoire. Russia's renowned Kirov Ballet honors innovative dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky in this quartet of live performances at Paris' Théâtre du Châtelet. The Kirov dancers present "Sheherazade," "Le Spectre de la Rose," "The Polovtsian Dances" and "The Firebird," ballets closely associated with Nijinsky. Mikhail Fokine, chief choreographer to ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev, choreographed the dances in these gala productions.

Together they deliver definitive interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s most popular symphonies. These acclaimed performances were filmed at Salle Pleyel in Paris during January 2010, directed by Andy Sommer. The themes of fate and death pervade Tchaikovsky’s final symphonies. The composition of the Fourth Symphony coincided with the breakdown of Tchaikovsky’s marriage and a failed suicide attempt, yet he considered it to be his greatest. In contrast he believed his Fifth to be flawed and uninviting, yet today this heartfelt work is widely regarded as one of his finest. The subject of fate is further instilled in the Sixth Symphony, premiered shortly before Tchaikovsky’s death. It was posthumously entitled ‘Pathétique’ by his brother and is a deeply melancholic work, full of dynamic extremes and an inherent sense of finality.

The sweeping saga of Alexander Borodin's "Prince Igor" springs to life with the talents of the Kirov Opera and Ballet in this memorable 1998 staging recorded live at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Nikolai Putilin assumes the role of the titular 12th-century royal, who is captured by the Polovtsian nomad Khan Konchak (Vladimir Vaneev) and later escapes, only to see his son fall in love with Konchak's daughter.

The imperious Onegin rejects naive Tatiana's proposal of love and also incites a duel with his best friend turned rival Lenski (Piotr Beczala). The concert on Saturday, July 15, 2017, was opened by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Manfred Honeck. In the first part of the concert, percussionist Martin Grubinger delighted the audience with highlights from his Parade concertos by Tan Dun and Bruno Hartl, among others. In the second part, a concert waltz by Carl Michael Ziehrer was played, as well as his own fantasy based on themes from Antonín Dvořák's fairytale opera "Rusalka" with the popular "Song to the Moon", and the evening ended with a variety suite by Dmitri Shostakovich. On July 16, 2017, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra took to the stage in the Feldherrnhalle. The chief conductor was Valery Gergiev. Chinese pianist Yuja Wang played one of her absolute favorite concertos: the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Johannes Brahms. And the Russian maestro also contributed Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" in the bombastic orchestral version by Maurice Ravel.

This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to more than 2,200 theaters in more than 70 countries worldwide.

The pain of unrequited love is portrayed unforgettably by two of today’s greatest stars. Renée Fleming is musically and dramatically radiant as the shy Tatiana, who falls in love with the worldly Onegin, played with devastating charisma by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Their mesmerizing vocalism and chemistry explode in one of opera’s most heartbreaking final scenes. With Valery Gergiev on the podium conducting Tchaikovsky’s passionate score, this performance is one for the ages.

Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka's magical masterpiece in its entirety, inspired by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin's poem of a Russian tale. An evil sorcerer Chernomor casts a spell over wedding celebrations for Ruslan and Lyudmila at the court of Svetozar, the Prince of Kiev. Lyudmila vanishes and her father promises her hand and half his kingdom to the knight who rescues her. Ruslan on this quest of rescue encounters the knights Ratmir and Farlaf, the wise wizard Finn, the slave of Ratmir, Gorislava and sorceress Naina before confronting Chernomor in his magic garden. After all the challenges for Ruslan, true love prevails.
