A pair of mismatched cops stumble onto a major protection racket involving a seedy restaurant.

October 1918: Karl Liebknecht is released from prison and Berlin workers celebrate his release. Although WWI is almost over, the German Kaiserreich in vain sends its last reserves to the slaughter. The working class is in a rebellious mood; the uprising of Kiel’s sailors against war and militarism sets off a call for revolution led by Liebknecht. On November 9, Liebknecht declares the Free Socialist Republic of Germany. But pro-Kaiser military and right wing Social Democrats oppose him.

One day, the happily married Karl Lehmann is asked by his single colleague, Mrs. Schmidt, for an unusual service: She wants a child. Lehmann is willing to help. His wife Inge and Mrs. Schmidt have a child at the same time, and since the women like each other, they make an agreement. They share Karl Lehmann. One week Inge gets him, one week Mrs. Schmidt - always alternating. It could be nice if it weren't for the prudish, shocked or even envious people around them. However, some see it in a positive light. A Mr. Schmidt is interested in Inge's week off and a colleague Lehmann is interested in Mrs. Schmidt's week off. And it's not long before Mr. Karl Lehmann is booted out and seeks refuge with a waitress.

In 1806 Berlin, the salon of the beautiful Frau von Carayon and her daughter Victoire, who is suffering from illness, is a magnet for some of the officers of the elite regiment based here, such as the cavalry captain von Schach, but it also attracts the writer von Bülow and his publisher Sander.

Ama, Senta and Klara are sisters in their thirties and couldn't be more different. Ama studies medicine, Senta is a dedicated prostitute and Klara is more of a house maker, who desperately wants a child, even if it is from her abusive, lorry driver husband. Their parents, Rosa and Erich (who suffers from dementia) are tucked away in and old peoples home, which affords the girls some peace and quiet.

This elaborate two-part television film features a section from the life of communist worker leader Ernst Thälmann. It begins with the bloody riots on May 1, 1929 in Berlin, in which police officers shot at demonstrating workers, and ends with February 7, 1933, when Thälmann appeared as a speaker at the illegal meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Germany in goat neck. This period was marked by the struggle of the Communists against the ever stronger National Socialists and the rise of Adolf Hitler.

Three couples want to spend a short break together. Some have a traffic accident, the others are prevented professionally. So the designer Robert and the youth helper Ellen are forced to spend the days in a remote farmhouse alone with her young son. The previously suppressed marriage crisis breaks open. Allegations, confessions, charges, self-accusations are in the room. Painfully, they come to the realization that only their own happiness is responsible for their happiness. With the old landlord, each of them finds himself. In the end, Robert and Ellen want to try a new beginning.

Berlin in the 1930s - Adolf Hitler comes to power, communists and social democrats are persecuted, books are burned and Jewish citizens are ostracized. The German couple Anna and Robert Zodinger have fled from Germany from the Nazis and have found refuge in Switzerland. For Robert Zodinger, a former editor, an extradition to Germany would be like a certain death sentence or admission to a concentration camp. The two find protection from the old Webherrn Stutz, who supports them despite the open hostility of his son-in-law Hilber. To make ends meet, Anna works as a waitress while she and her husband have to stay on guard constantly.

Even the military academy can't stop kind-hearted officer Gottfried Engelhardt from seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. Everything in the young GDR is blooming: Engelhardt's career, the socialist state, the black market, and maybe even a chance at love.

Ekke and Karsten are newcomers to the shipyard. Paddy claims to have heard it on Rügen radio. It seems to him that lance corporal Weißenbach, who is not only the oldest of the men but also a formidable armoured personnel carrier driver, has been a reliable stand-in for him. Thus, Riedel is all the more surprised when he learns that Weißenbach boosts the squad's performance with partly questionable methods.

Fritz Schmenkel, a farm worker and soldier in the fascist Wehrmacht, deserts in Belarus in 1941. He wants to survive, makes his way to Russian farmers and comes into contact with Soviet partisans who, after long interrogations by the German teacher and current partisan Miron, take him in as one of their own. Schmenkel proves his reliability in a number of daring actions and is awarded the Order of the Red Banner. In the winter of 1943/44, he is given a reconnaissance mission and falls into the hands of the fascists in Minsk. After days of interrogation, which he withstands, the Nazis execute him.

East Berlin, late 1970s: Because she doesn't really have any particular career aspirations, Marta becomes a nurse. And since true love is a long time coming, the 17-year-old seduces Monty, the young man next door. Then there are her parents' marital problems. Marta is in the middle of the exciting trials of growing up.
