Odessa, August 1970. A heat wave. The city is full of tourists. Boris, a journalist and foreign affairs specialist, and his eight-year-old son Valeri arrive from Moscow to visit Boris’ in-laws, Grigori Iosifovich and Raisa Irovna Davidov. Mishka Yaponchik was a Ukrainian gangster, Jewish, lived in Odessa at the beginning of the XX century, the military leader of two thousand of gangsters and the prototype of Benia Krik in The "Odessa Tales" by Soviet Jewish writer Isaak Babel. Born Moisei Vinnitsky, Yaponchik ("the Japanese") was an exceptional and eccentric character. Hailed as the next Robin Hood, he established his own code of conduct forbidding the robbing of the poor and professional classes.

The Shatalov family plays an important role in the life of their neighborhood. The head of the family, Alyona, runs a management company that serves the whole quarter. Her husband Mikhail is a doctor at the district polyclinic, and their 20—year-old son Artyom serves as a district police officer. Every day, this magnificent family solves the everyday and everyday problems of the residents of their area, constantly getting into funny and curious situations. But one day the Shatalovs' personal problems grow to the scale of a domestic disaster.

The brilliant scientist Mikhail Rubin ends up in the camp because of a personal conflict with the People's Commissar Beria. But suddenly Rubin is released: his best friend and colleague Kirill Muromtsev recommended Mikhail to a secret project to create a Soviet atomic bomb, and the physicist's candidacy was approved by academician Kurchatov. Mikhail returns to Moscow and finds out that while he was in the camp, his fiancee Anna Galeeva managed to become Kirill's wife. To fulfill the task of the state, young scientists will have to work together, despite the personal drama.

Investigator Pavel Frolov gets into a car accident. After that, his life is torn into two parallel realities — in one of them his son Kirill survived the disaster, in the other his wife Svetlana. Every morning, when Pavel wakes up, he finds himself alternately, in reality with his son, then with his wife. In each of these lives, he tries to find out who or what is behind the accident in order to try to connect the two realities together. And at the same time, to return the respect of his son and the love of his wife, to whom he often preferred work before.
