After having spent 22 months in prison, Viktor Pálos returns to his homeland, where he is going to be involved in the robbery committed by his relatives.

Bálint Zeke, the honest old miller of the village, leaves his water-mill to Anna, his only daughter, while the will also provides for the mill to be managed by Forintos Mátyás, a young miller, whom he has been raising since he was very young and treats as his own son. The two young people seem to "like each other anyway", and their marriage would make the old man happy.

Pista Dankó falls in love with Ilonka Jáky, the beautiful blonde lady, so his old love, Rózsi, the wild gypsy girl, puts a curse on him. Ilonka elopes with Pista and they marry. They live in difficult circumstances, but Lajos Pósa takes up the talented young man. Here he meets Rózsi, who has become a famous dancer and now has a hold on him too. Meanwhile, Pista falls ill and returns home to die. In his last hours, a package arrives from Rosie. He plays his last song with the returned violin.

In World War I, two men who look almost identical fight in the same battalion at the front. dr. Benedek Gábor, a famous solicitor in Eger, is the defense counsel of a murderer, who killed his wife out of jealousy. Gábor lives in a happy marriage with Anna. One day, however, Szentgyörgyi Péter, a famous pianist, comes to Eger. He once was loved by Anna, who in those days was training to become an artist herself. Gábor has no knowledge of these events of the past. He, therefore, associates the now renewed relationship with the story of the murderer he is the legal representative of.

Péter was taken in by his brother, who was loyal to the emperor, and he wants to execute him in Kassa together with the other Kurucs. Krisztinka inspires the tired kuruc troops with a song and Rákóczi's music to capture Kassa and free the prisoners...

Kata Juhász is the shrew in this updating of Shakespeare's play. Kata's wedding is scheduled but her groom deserts her over her whims. In order to prevent the guests from being disappointed, she hires a tramp from the banks of the Danube to play the role of the groom. The tramp, Chief Engineer Péter Szabó, doesn't bend to her caprices. This leads to confusion and resolution in the Shakespearian fashion.

In the 1600s, Hungary is plundered by the Turks and the Laban. Kecskemét, the free royal city, is not exempt from this. Miska, the wily son of Lestyák, a master tailor, suggests to the town council that they should ask for a permanent beacon from Buda, thus protecting Kecskemét from the harassment of raiding troops. The town assembles its gift of jewellery, cloth and a beautiful girl, and Miska sets off for Buda. On the way, the young gypsy girl falls in love with Mishka, who elopes with her in a boy's dress. He can do this because instead of the bewitchment he hopes for, he is given only a fancy robe to protect the city. Little do they know at the time how much the robe is worth. Before its wearer, all true believers will crumble to dust and do his bidding.

You can get anywhere in a tailcoat. Viktor Norton, a young man imprisoned by mistake, also knows this. In Viktor’s tailcoat, he can easily get to the Excelsior Hotel, where he will meet the newly wealthy Dupont couple and their daughter Marie.

Solicitor Lukács is well known for his expertise in divorce. He lets a room and while he is away, Csahos, his articled clerk, in charge of business affairs in the absence of the solicitor, leaves almost all of the flat to Székely Klári, a pretty university student. Antal Pager defends a strange woman, Maria Lazar, and the next thing he knows he is named a co-respondent in a divorce case. He does so with the understanding that they will be divorced as soon as possible. But the best-laid plans sometimes change.

Count Gedeon Boroghy would like to see his last two relatives, Peter and Eva, married, so that the family fortune can pass to their rightful heirs without dissipation. The Count would like to bring them together, so he announces his own death and stipulates in his will that the heirs must stay at the castle for a month, eat together and kiss each other goodbye. The young people, who have already fallen out during their journey, hatch a variety of plans to force the other to break the will and thus lose the inheritance. When it turns out that Uncle Gideon is alive and the will no longer stands between them, they reconcile and agree to comply with the old count's wishes even without an inheritance.

In an outbreak of a rightful anger, Péter Keresztessy kills Ágota, his deceased wife's cousin, who, in an attempt to become her successor, speaks ill of her thus trying to malign her character. Péter is prepared for capital punishment but is sentenced for life. 15 years later he is pardoned.

Kulinyi, the theatre secretary in Budapest, becomes the director of a rural theatre. He takes with him a talented, budding theatre couple, Gábor Bálint and Éva Pap. He fights a hopeless battle with drunken and jaded actors, undemanding audiences, and demands the release of their untalented relatives with creditors. Finally, tired of failure, all three return to Pest. Kulinyi resumes his post as secretary. Gábor Bálint, out of options, approaches the famous actor Ferenc Tőrös and asks him to let him play the role for one night only, so that he can prove his talent.
