The film is an adaptation of a novel by Ismåeel Walieddin. The main character, Ahmad, leaves rural eastern Egypt for the city hoping to become economically self-sufficient, gets an apartment for his parents, and obtains a law degree. He and his family are refugees from a town occupied by the Israeli army, Ismaåilia. Ali, the owner of the Malatily Bathhouse, offers to let him stay there for free. Ahmad encounters several characters there, including Naåeema, a prostitute who he becomes obsessed with, and Raouf, a homosexual man.

When Mona marries the seemingly decent police officer Hisham, she finds out there is more into him than what he shows to the people.

Nawal, the youngest daughter, becomes the liaison between Ibrahim and his colleagues, helping him escape. Abdul Hamid tries to inform the political police of Ibrahim’s location, but Samia stops him. The head of the political police suspects them and punishes them to find Ibrahim. Ibrahim refuses to leave the country, returning to fight colonialism and participating in an operation.

A poor girl falls into the traps of a gang headed by a drug dealer, and turns into an addict. She eventually starts working as a prostitute, and meets a doctor who tries to save her from her ruined life.

The story revolves around Sultan, the poor child who grows up and becomes a military correspondent at an elite brigade. He enjoys the sympathy of the police officer, the son of the general, unlike the rest of the house.

Abbas, a resident of Cairo, is appointed by the government to hold the office of supervisor in a post office in a small village in Upper Egypt.

Based on the novel by Latifa al-Zayyat, which explores a middle-class Egyptian girl's coming of age against the background of the growing Egyptian nationalist movement before the 1952 Egypt revolution.
