Set in the China civil war period in 1940s. A KMT pilot finishes his study in US and returns China to join KMT air force. But he is disappointed with the behavior of KMT and joins CPC army.

Lin Gensheng comes to work in the desert.

A young and ambitious lawyer who has just graduated starts his own office and is ready to conquer the world. One night a female taxi-driver comes into his offic, tells him she has been raped and wants him to track down the rapist. He is not just excited about his first 'case', he also becomes intrigued by the woman who describes the details of her rape. Looking for the culprit, he hears the same thing everywhere: 'I have seen him, he just left'. In the meantime, the lawyer regularly visits the barber's shop over the road where he feels attracted to the fresh natural beauty of the hairdresser. Then one evening he is invited round to the taxi driver's home and sees for the first time her 'true' face...

After the decisive “Three Battles,” the East China Field Army is ordered to encircle Shanghai. Commander Tang Yunfu’s 300,000-strong KMT garrison readies for a climactic showdown. Under directives to liberate and yet preserve the city, Commander Fang and Commissar Zhang orchestrate a pincer movement, luring Tang’s main force to the suburbs for annihilation while infiltrating Shanghai’s heart. With underground leader Lin Fan’s help, our troops seize territory south of the Suzhou River. The KMT falls back to the north bank, and Liu Yi’s division makes a final stand downtown. Street fighting erupts as our vanguard storms the power plant, city hall, and key installations. Overwhelmed by coordinated military might and political pressure, the remaining defenders hoist the white flag, marking Shanghai’s liberation.
