The adaptation of the eponymous play by Carl Zuckmayer tells the story of renegade general Harras of the German Luftwaffe, who during WWII openly criticizes the Nazi regime. As a consequence, he is put under surveillance, and even imprisoned for a brief period of time. Still remaining outspoken, Harras realizes the horrific dimensions of this hopeless and injust war waged by Germany.

Karl Nass and Jonny Tetens are captain and helmsman on a long voyage. The nightclub "Zum Klabautermann" in St. Pauli is a cheerful place where people like to meet. Every evening, when the two bargemen wrap the guests in sailor's yarn as supposed sailors on a long voyage and Lotti, known as "Das laufende Glück", knits the clientele, things get very lively. Can landlady Hermine prevent a competitor from poaching her "artistic" staff...?

The cozy harbor pub "Störtebeker" is run by the ship's cook Karl Brammer together with his wife Mary. One day Karl is caught in a small smuggling operation and is sent to prison for three months. Mary prefers to conceal the truth and tells him that her husband is back at sea. But then fate strikes: the supposed ship goes down with man and mouse and everyone who believes they can inherit something from Karl storms Mary's house. With so much "sympathy" from the grieving relatives, the man believed to be dead has to put things in order himself.

With his human nature and good-natured character, Police Master Johannes Wilke has everything under control. For this reason, he can afford to enjoy a glass of schnapps and play chess on the phone while on duty. Both his colleague Benthin and Pastor Petersen are not at all happy with such an approach to the job. But when a floater, a naked bather and a thieving tipple brother turn up, Wilke puts his beloved chessboard to one side...

Norbert and Traute get married and are now looking for a home. He is an accountant and doesn't attach much importance to things that are desirable to many others - the main thing is to live well and celebrate the festivals as they fall. She is a typist and is only used to cleanliness and correctness at home. For financial reasons, she cannot afford her own apartment for the time being. Either the rent is too high or the building cost subsidy is too high. So the young couple decide to live with Traute's parents for the time being. However, Norbert, who grew up in completely different circumstances, leaves after ten months. In order to keep her husband, Traute decides to live with him at his parents' - but that doesn't work out either.

Having been disappointed by her first marriage, Annegret Klüver, the young widow of a farmer, is a long way from remarrying. Tina Petersen takes advantage of this: The experienced maid guards the young farmer's wife like a watchdog at every turn, especially against unwanted male visitors. The "Weiberhof" thus becomes a lonely farmstead run by just two women...

A big change is on the horizon in a small northern German community. The local council agrees that the village needs a doctor, a properly qualified doctor of medicine. But where to put the doctor and practice? There is only one option: The house of midwife Mathilde Jansen, which belongs to the municipality. Midwives are becoming unfashionable anyway. Although she is forced to vacate her home as a result of the change that has been decided, the midwife goes along with it. Mathilde herself gets involved in the search for a doctor. The local council is soon in for a rude awakening. Midwife Jansen, known as "Mother Griepsch" in the old North German dialect, has all too wilfully bungled the local politicians.
