Stuck in a mining town near Vladivostok in 1947 amongst Soviet exiles and Japanese POWs (Japanese prisoners remained in Siberia for years after the war had ended), the kids have to come up with something to keep them busy. Two friends, Valerka and Galia, play some peculiar, very dangerous games of their own amid the man-made wasteland of Suchan.

The permanent chairman of one of Ukraine's leading collective farms, a former front-line soldier, is caught off guard by the unexpected: the spring is unusually difficult and does not bode well for the harvest, his health has deteriorated, and his best foreman has been transferred to a struggling farm. However, Zakhar Platonovich does not complain to his superiors and relies solely on his fellow villagers...

The film is based on the early autobiographical stories of Vasily Makarovich Shukshin. A bright, emotionally rich movie about the childhood of a boy from a distant Altai village, about his family — his sister and mother, about work, holidays, joys and troubles of ordinary Russian peasants during the Great Patriotic War...

A small Russian town is prospering, because it's main industry is the chocolate factory. But this kind of prosperity comes at a very high price. Everybody in this town is eating plenty of chocolate, and everyone is suffering from diabetes. There is a thick smell of chocolate in the air, and the local river has brown water, that is filthy with chocolate pollution. So people decided to put an end to their suffering and to shut the chocolate factory down. But the chocolate business is so lucrative, that the factory is expanding, and rapidly increasing the production of chocolate. Conscious citizens are terrified, and an anti-chocolate riot is brewing.

A film story about everyday life of people in the countryside, their work in the collective farm and their attitude to their work. Unlike those who fulfil their duties according to the commands of the party leadership, milkmaid Praskovya Likholetova belongs to those people who do not pass by mismanagement and injustice. She has always been a truth-seeker, principled, honest, convinced of her rightness, and this has often led to conflicts. Having worked almost 40 years on the farm, Praskovya was forced to retire. But before leaving, she said that now she has a lot of time, and she will take care of their affairs...

War correspondent Lopatin takes a 20-day-leave from his hard work at the front in 1942. He travels to faraway Tashkent to meet the family of the killed soldier and visit the film set of the screen adaptation of his war-time stories. Lopatin also manages to walk the streets of Tashkent, take part in a factory workers' meeting and have a short-lived love affair. Although with no bombings and fighting, the city dwellers breathe the atmosphere of the ongoing war.
