Harry Leon Wilson has written nothing more diverting than this story of the irreproachable English valet who is lost in a poker game to a rough-and-ready westerner and taken to Red Gap ultimately to become its social mentor and chief caterer, and there is sheer delight in the story of how the Earl, brought over to save his younger brother from the vampirish clutches of Klondike Kate, makes the lady his Countess and once more stands Red Gap upon its somewhat dizzy head.

Scanlon is pulling off a land swindle by selling lots in a ghost town claiming the power company is bringing in a line. As a bonus he throws in shares in a worthless gold mine. Gene is on to Scanlon and tries to get him to buy back the deeds by salting the mine with gold. But when a new vein is really discovered Gene has to stop the sales but is trapped in the mine by Scanlon's men.

Babs Weston agrees to marry adventurer Richard Forestall before his hasty departure, accepting his ring and promising to be faithful. Richard returns to find that his fiancée has become a "victim of jazz" and is engaged to two other men, one of whom is not yet divorced. He leaves Babs and visits his parents on their island in the Caribbean Sea, where, by coincidence, Babs and some of her thrill-seeking friends become stranded. Richard proceeds to reform the young wastrels by giving them useful occupations, and wins Babs over to a more healthful life.

Jim Bradley is on trial for murder, and at the eleventh hour, Sandy O'Connell furnishes an alibi, swearing that Bradley was with him at the time the murder was committed. Sandy is a very common sort of fellow, and when Bradley asks him why he did it, he replies that when he was a homeless kid of the gutter, Jim Bradley was pointed out to him as the man who gave money for the burial of his mother and father.

Olga, a writer, at a loss to bring her book to a fitting climax, goes for celestial inspiration into church, where she kneels and listens to the wonderful music of Gustave, the organist. She meets him as he leaves the church, and they are instinctively drawn to each other.

Captain Fane, an English army officer stationed at Cairo, is in love with Lady Fiennis, who is treated most cruelly by her husband. Fane returns to England when he finds that she refuses to leave him. Five years later Fane's sister summons him to tell him that her son Frankie, who is only twenty-two years old, has decided to marry a widow many years his senior.

Theresa, Gladys' cousin, desiring to spend a few quiet weeks in the country, pays the Nortons a surprise visit and arrives on the same train with Irwin.

Argentino Boldo has a valuable book in his possession that Texas Tommy, Hesitation Nell and One-Step McGinnis desire to appropriate. The hero. Prancing Daly, and his sweetheart, Tango Kate, try to prevent the intruders from stealing the book. The tangoists have a lively time, which brings about many comical scenes.

A clerk in a broker's office is accused of stealing a million dollars' worth of railroad bonds, but they are later found to be worthless, his innocence is proven, and he is given a promotion for his efforts.
