After a heart attack, landowner Ferdinand Kerekházy summons his son Ferko Kerekházy from abroad, who, to his conservative father's dismay, sends a wagonload of machines ahead to set up an irrigation system and turn the saline, barely productive fields into fertile ones. The old count doesn't want to hear about his son's plans, and wants Ferko to marry Baroness Zólyomi. Since his son refuses, he disowns him. After his release, he breaks with his social class, works as a blacksmith and marries Jessy, who has been faithfully waiting for him.

The famous woman singer is touring the country. Following the advice of the chamber maid in the hotel, she counts the corners of the windows in her room to have all her dreams come true. The next day she wakes up, frightened of the prospect of her bad dream, which was full of scandals and chases, and finally a marriage, come true.

A landowner Gáthy and his wife adopt an orphaned infant at the birth of their own son, only to realize too late that they can’t tell which baby is which. They raise both boys as their own until, on the brink of the sons’ marriages, questions of lineage brought up by prospective mothers and meddling mothers-in-law threaten to unravel their family.
