The young man must set up a clear border between Finland and Russia, white and red, enemy and friend, us and them. The director Lauri Nurkse tells that Veijarit is a film about "arjensietokyvyttömyys" (= inability to tolerate everyday life) and about the Peter Pan complex. The main actor Mikko Leppilampi says it's about "kolkyttoistavuotiaat" (= thirtyeenagers = people of thirty behaving like teenagers). An immediate reference point is the commedia all'italiana of the 1950s and the 1960s, the black comedy often exposing the infantile stage of development of the Italian male. Saku and Ässä are anti-heroes, but we never fail to sense the humanity behind their shallow and crazy ways. Veijarit is a satire and a parody of a superficial way of life, but there is a vitality in the protagonists that we feel can lead them to a more meaningful stage of existence after the prolonged youth full of sound and fury. There is a motif of transcendence in the imagery of flying: will the balloons carry me or will they burst.

The father and mother flee to Lapland to prepare for Christmas, but peace is at a standstill when the children tag along. When Jussi's new girlfriend Viktoria is revealed to be the millionaire's only child, the father does everything he can to make the best possible impression on the family's new daughter-in-law. As one surprise follow after another, the father must put all his “expertise” into play.

When Tommi's father-in-law Johan is ordered to take a break after a medical emergency, the family decides to go on vacation to sunny Spain. Johan has one condition: he wants to take his car with him. Tommi agrees to drive Johan's car to Spain – together with Juhis. However, things don't go quite as planned, and when Johan's car is stolen, Tommi and Juhis decide to take matters into their own hands, and soon our heroes are hurtling from one disaster to the next at breakneck speed.
