Zarqa Nawaz

In this short comedy, two Canadian Muslim brothers are sleeping in their home when the barbecue in the backyard blows up. They are immediately suspected of being dangerous Middle Eastern terrorists and their neighbourhood turns against them. This film was inspired by events following the Oklahoma City bombing.

Using original animation, archival footage and personal interviews, this full-length documentary portrays the multiple relationships Canadian Muslim women entertain with Islam’s place of worship, the mosque. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. In North America, a large number of converts are women. Many are drawn to the religion because of its emphasis on social justice and spiritual equality between the sexes. Yet, many mosques force women to pray behind barriers, separate from men, and some do not even permit women to enter the building. Exploring all sides of the issue, the film examines the space – both physical and social – granted to women in mosques across the country.

A family on its way home is forced to deal with circumstances they would never hope for.

The series focuses on the Muslim community in the fictional prairie town of Mercy, Saskatchewan (population 14,000).

Zarqa's ex-husband is marrying a younger, skinnier, white, yoga instructor, so Zarqa announces that she's coming to the wedding with her own cliché - a white brain surgeon named Brian. Now she just has to find him.
