The Night of the Pencils was a series of kidnappings and forced disappearances, followed by the torture, rape, and murder of a number of young students during the last Argentine dictatorship (known as the National Reorganization Process). The kidnappings took place over the course of several days beginning on September 16, 1976.

Buenos Aires movie director, very fond of the legend of the King of Patagonia and Araucania, decides to make a movie about it. Despite of financial troubles, technical problems, misfortune and desertions, he undertakes the journey to Patagonia for the film with a second-rate actor company. Neglected by the producer and shortly after by the company, he will make the movie alone, in a surreal landscape like mad.

Trelles and Amílcar share a room in a boarding house, the rent of which has not been paid for a long time. Trelles is a waiter in a typical Buenos Aires bar while Amilcar is an amateur bolero singer, who divides his time between sleeping and singing for free in a cabaret.

Alberto, Jorge, Ricardo and Tristan are employees of a shoe store, all are married and share the friendship also between their wives. The 4 friends, faithful to the rogue style of Buenos Aires, go out of their way to have love affairs with the beautiful customers of the shoe store, and for that purpose one day they decide to rent, secretly, an apartment to use as a "bulín". The problems begin from then on, as everyone wants to be the first to release it and then, successively, take turns for their adventures. As is to be expected, it does not take long for the first entanglements to appear, while their wives seem to begin to suspect the adventures of these four typical Buenos Aires chantas.

The failure of Budiño Ramon, who plans first murder of his father and is recognized after unable to carry it out, is due largely to the general attitude of a society that tolerates no dramatic gestures. However, the inadequacies of radical class, beliefs, feelings, profession and memory also plays a leading role in the drama.
