The Baron of Qvinnevad Castle has financial problems and is forced to show the estate to tourists. The baron finds out that an unknown person is trying to acquire the castle.

In an occupied country, the people rise to throw off the occupants. This includes Jens the farmer and his three sons who successfully perform sneak attacks on the invading army.

Bernt comes to a small town to rob the bank. But behind the counter stands his old friends Hjalmar, and he has to pretend it was all a joke. Hjalmar asks him to spend the night at his home. He meets Ellen, now Hjalmar's wife. Bernt is still attracted to her and it was only a coincidence that it was Hjalmar who married her and not Bernt. When Hjalmar goes on a business trip, Bernt stays with Ellen.

The film takes place in the 1780s. The Russians plan to overthrow Gustav III from the Swedish throne and Lieutenant Rehusen tries to stop them, while fighting for his king, he also fights for his love.
