Baldevins bryllup (English: Baldevin's wedding) is a 1926 Norwegian comedy film directed by George Schnéevoigt, starring Einar Sissener and Victor Bernau. The film is based on a play by Vilhelm Krag, and tells the story of how Simen Sørensen (Bernau) manages to get his friend Baldevin Jonassen (Sissener) married to the lady next door. The film was renovated in 2006, for the 100-years anniversary of Kristiansand Cinema.

The story is wacky – a gypsy is cursed by her father, so that she has to deny her illegitimate son in order for him to have a successful life. She gives him to a well-to-do lady who has lost her own child. Later, he has grown up to be a politician who wants to become the foreign minister. He doesn’t know that his real mother is the famous Madame de Thebes, the fortuneteller who all politicians make sure to visit! This information falls into the hands of a rival, who tries to use it to ruin his career. Meanwhile, the rival’s attractive daughter is attacked by a ruffian and needs to be rescued… There are a lot of striking images in this film. You can see the beauty of them even if the state of the print is far from perfect. The Norwegian actress Ragna Wettergreen gives a haunting performance as Madame de Thebes, with wisdom and regret – and quite a few melodramatic gestures. Understatement was not the norm in those days.

Professor Andrew Bobileff leads a quiet and withdrawn life with his daughter Anja. Then, out of the blue, he is accused of taking part in a conspiracy against the government. He proclaims his innocence, yet is imprisoned before the eyes of his daughter, who vows to exact a bloody revenge on the governor. Anja flees to the capital, finds work as an actress at the court theatre and becomes engaged to fellow actor Jean Fort. Stock market tycoon Mr. Fargan has a passion for Rembrandt paintings, and when he receives a tip that Count Vinding is in possession of one, he decides that it must be his. But the Count refuse to sell.

Brothers Robert and Hugo lead idyllic lives on a magnificent estate by the water. Their father, the old landowner, favours Robert, while Hugo is the apple of his mother’s eye. However, Hugo is not quite the goody two-shoes he appears to be: he has borrowed money from a crooked moneylender who is now threatening to contact his father. Robert tries to help his brother, but an unfortunate mix-up leads their father to believe that it is Robert who has incurred debts and, to make matters worse, tried to steal money. Hugo suffers a sudden fit of weakness, and the doctor’s orders for absolute rest make Robert confess in order to protect his brother. He only just manages to reveal the truth to his mother before he is thrown out of the family home. When the brothers meet again after four long years, they do so on Peele Island under the rays of a flashing beacon.
