Nora lives a perfect life in her perfect home with her perfect husband Helmer. But inside, something feels completely wrong. A nagging doubt has begun to haunt her. The film is a modern paraphrase of Henrik Ibsen's classic story about Nora and Helmer – a story that, in light of our modern performance-oriented society, has taken on new meaning.

9-year old Valdemar lives with his father Bo on a country house in the province. They have a friendly relationship, but Bo is suffering from alcohol problems, and Valdemar must therefore often be the adult one and take responsibility for himself. When Valdemar one day suspects the nurse Ulla for wanting to force him away from Bo, he starts an imaginary battle to defend the farm and to stay with Bo. This gets Bo to look deeply into himselves and deceive the only thing he loves in the world, his son, to give him a childhood before it is too late.

The world of the mother and daughter interweaves as she tries to make it trough a alien yet familiar landscape of places, emotions and memories in an attempt to get home. And get closure.

When Jan's sister Lisbeth parks Mogens in a nursing home and Mogens apparently loses his will to live, Jan decides to give him something to live for: He stages a grand journey to China, in the middle of his two-room apartment in a desolate ghetto.
