This film combines live action/original animation and library animation. Mickey steals a magic hat from a Sorcerer and is put under a spell by the angry magi so that no one will recognize him until he finds his own magic within. While Mickey is on his quest, network news teams around the country desperately try to find the famous, beloved mouse who has mysteriously disappeared. On his quest, Mickey pays a visit to the patrons of "Cheers", meets up with the Keatons from "Family Ties", and winds up on Disneyland's Main Street the night before his Birthday celebration is to take place. It is there that he finds he has all the magic inside him that he will ever need. The spell is broken and the Birthday bash commences as the whole World celebrates the beloved Mickey Mouse.

Suicidal poet Archy tries to end his life by jumping off a bridge, but awakens to find he has assumed the life of a cockroach and has become a part of a community of creatures living in a newspaper office. He also discovers that he can still write poetry, using a typewriter, and begins to enjoy his new life. Archy develops deep feelings for the lovely but self-destructive cat Mehitabel, but will have to fight to win her from bad-boy tomcat Bill.

Simply Mad About the Mouse collects affectionate tributes to Disney's songs from artists like the Gipsy Kings, Soul II Soul, and Kirk Whalum. Bobby McFerrin's "Siamese Cat Song," En Vogue's "Someday My Prince Will Come," and Harry Connick, Jr.'s "Bare Necessities" are among the highlights of this album. Also included are Michael Bolton's cover of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and Billy Joel's "When You Wish Upon a Star.
