Based on a stage play of the same name by the one of the biggest names in the history of Latvian literature Rainis, "Put, vejini" tells a story of an unconventional love that blossoms between the handsome, wealthy and impetuous merchant Uldis and the timid, humble and clear-hearted orphan Baiba.

Valdemārs 'Voldis' Viters is released after seven years in prison. He is 46 years old and has no family or job. Some of his old friends have abandoned the life of crime, and policeman Leo Aleksandrs, as well as the beautiful taxi driver Irēna, try to persuade Voldis to forget the past and move on. But when the crime boss Teksis proposes a plan to rob a jewelry store, Voldis agrees, thinking this will be his last crime before starting a new life.

The 14th of June 1941, Soviet-occupied Latvia. Without warning, the authorities break into the house of Melanie and her husband Alexander, and force them to leave everything behind. Together with more than 15 000 Latvians, Melanie and her son get deported to Siberia. In her fight against cold, famine and cruelty, she only gains new strength through the letters she writes to Alexander, full of hope for a free Latvia and a better tomorrow.

Doctor Rūdolfs spends time at his country cottage, and there he meets teacher Laura - a mother of two children whose husband is in prison. Rūdolfs rescues Laura's daughter, Zaiga, who is sick, befriends her son, Maris, and falls in love with Laura, but she desperately struggles with her feelings of responsibility towards her family.

1917. In Petrograd, a young Latvian boy Jezups signs up to work for the revolution and is sent to central Russia to show films and campaign for joining the Red Army. Jezups is a naive idealist and would rather not touch weapons at all, but life destroys his belief that it is possible to do without violence. On his 18th birthday, Māris receives a motorcycle from his parents, and, while driving around with his friends, they pass a wedding car. The bride, Inese, is entering a loveless marriage, so she allows Māris to steal her from the wedding reception.

The elderly nursing home residents for years feel worthless and troublesome. But then a crazy idea strikes them - to waive their pensions and enroll in the army as volunteers thus saving the country from financial crisis and spending excitingly the last years of their lives. The oldies are wise enough at organizing this event and now real adventures begin.

The path of the main character to the tops of creative work is a chain of victories and losses, in which gains and irretrievable losses alternate.
