Wanderings of a sordid and abandoned city of Lisbon from the graphic work of Stuart de Carvalhais

Margarida Senhorinha, aged 69, is illiterate but records poems, songs and memories of her birthdays on a tape recorder. She’s spent forty years in her house with its garden amidst the blocks of flats of an ever expanding Cacém. Now, her entire life depends on her landlord. She’s at risk of lose her house, perhaps to make way for yet another tower block. A living memory of rural Portugal that has come face to face with urban Cacém, Margarida Senhorinha asks simply: “and now where do I go?”

The near future: Bruno is trying to win back his ex-wife. Under the pressure of her domineering mother and a new (arranged) boyfriend, Jorge, Isabel brings charges of harassment against Bruno. Bruno is trialed and sentenced. A device designed to suffocate him if he gets within 100 meters of Isabel is implanted in his throat. But that doesn’t stop Bruno, he practices holding his breath.

Ai... Portugal!

Ana is a child, girl, adult, tall, fat, thin... Ana is the part of all of us that once in a while wakes up without knowing who she is. That conscious amnesia that propels us to travel, question, look without tiring even though it might not be clear who or what we might find.
