Vinayan

Independence is a 1999 Malayalam fantasy film directed by Vinayan and starring Vani Viswanath, Kushboo Sundar, Kalabhavan Mani and Indraja in the lead roles.

A biographical drama that chronicles the life and the untimely death of actor Kalabhavan Mani, who rose from his humble beginnings to become one of the most versatile artists in Malayalam cinema.

Kuttan, is a thirty - year old man, but he has the intelligence of a ten - year old. People call him Karumadikkuttan as he is dark. Everyone has sort of affection for him and he too is always ready to do anything for anybody in the village. The remuneration that he gets for any job somehow is never above five rupees. But he works really hard when he is terribly hungry just for the sake of this meagre amount. And he has no complaint against anybody. People even ridicule him. But he thinks only of the positive aspect of things and has no grudge against anybody.

Home Minister Nateshan tries to molest Nandini the government servant, who files a criminal case against him (a throw-back on the Neelalohidadasan vs. Nalini Netto case?). In the mean time her son Manikuttan becomes the college champion and is scheduled to receive the trophy from the Chief Minister. As chance would have it, it is the Home Minister who turns up to give away the trophy. In the course of his speech he insults Nandini. Provoked by his words, Manikuttan assaults the minister and is arrested, but cannot be traced after that
