An eight part ciné-novel (episodic film) set during the French Revolution, telling the story of the Dauphin's childhood in Versailles, his life at the Conciergerie during the Revolution, and his untimely death.

In Macao, where places of pleasure and arms trafficking are concentrated, a tragedy opposes an adventurer and his daughter whom he has brought up in ignorance of his profession. She is torn from her environment and saved from tragedy by a young journalist who loves her.

The two merrymakers Cartahu and Bailladrisse sail together on a cargo ship. When customs officers come aboard to conduct a search, Cartahu is unaware of a drug dealer's accomplice, who hides the box of narcotics in Cartahu's bag, which has already been visited. Unsuspecting, the two comrades go ashore, taking the precious box with them. At the hotel, by mistake, their luggage is given to another person. To recover the merchandise, the traffickers pursue the two friends, who nevertheless manage to have the whole gang arrested; and, after being tempted by pretty women to live with them, prefer to set sail for new adventures.

Paris, 1865. In a music-hall Manon accidentally kills her partner who was trying take sexual advantage of her. She is condemned to twenty years of hard labor first and then to be deported to marry a released convict. On the ship where she sails with her female fellow-sufferers she gets to know a young doctor and helps to suppress a revolt. Once arrived at her destination, Manon hesitates between her official fiancé and the doctor whose household she does not want to break...

A woman's marriage is on the rocks ; to avenge herself, she decides to take a lover for one night .So she buys all his stock from a balloon man and flies them through the Parisian sky ; all her balloons carry a message :"I will be alone after midnight" (hence the title); a lot a suitors comme to the rendezvous : a fisherman, a soldier, a traveler , a gentleman cambrioleur (a nod to Arsène Lupin?) and others ,much to Michel, a young man in love with her's displeasure.
