In the 18th century, Louis de Bourguignon is working with the Malichot's gang, but their ways are too 'unethical' for him. He creates his own band, acting under the name of Cartouche, making audacious robberies of the rich people, and even distributing the takings with the poor. Thus, cartouche attracts the people's sympathies, Venus's love, and hate from the Police and Malichot... Cartouche can escape all the traps they set at him - except the entrapments of love. Eventually, he will be saved by a woman, at her own cost.

Four noble ladies, four widows, live in isolation in a Berry ch teau. There's the Mme de Bussange, her two sisters Sylvie and Hélène, her sister-in-law Elisabeth and her little boy, who alone will pass on the family name. Two men come along: Gilbert and René, bringing trouble and confusion. Gilbert courts Hélène, while René becomes attached to Elisabeth. Relations between the widows become strained and heated, until an attempt is made on Elisabeth's life. The culprit, Sylvie, kills herself. In despair, Mme de Bussange sets fire to the castle and dies in the inferno.

Stanley Baker's O'Donovan is sent to steal the plans of a rival company's racing car designs, to ensure his employers win the competition. However, when opening a safe containing the plans, he triggers an alarm leading to a gun battle where he kills a number of people. James Robertson Justice, alarmed by the scandal surrounding the killings, orders his agent be killed surreptitiously to hide his involvement with the plot. The film uses original footage from the Mille Miglia , an Italian open-road endurance race, featuring classic period racing cars.

Despite the cautious advice of the newspaper editor and the pleas of his wife, who senses the dangers threatening them, Hugo forges ahead, plunging headlong into the labyrinth where gangsters are luring him to disappear. He finally unmasks the murderer. He finally gets his sensational story - but through his own carelessness, another girl falls victim to the gang. At the last second, the wife he thought he'd lost through his stubborn, madly clumsy attitude is still there, ready to comfort him.
