When Vasilisa was still small, the black sorcerer brought her mother an ominous gift - a chest with an enchanted wedding dress. Putting it on, Vasilisa could make a wish, and it would certainly be fulfilled. Once the girl was jealous of the blacksmith Ivan, and his eyes stopped seeing. Vasilisa had to pass the tests and strictly fulfill the sorcerer's order in order to restore sight to Ivan.

In a provincial town, a dangerous maniac appears, hunting women. On his account already several victims. The police, alarmed by the panic in the city, understand that it is necessary to act somehow. And the innocent people were captured, one of them is already waiting for the execution. Investigator Ignatov leads this case. He has to deal with lawlessness and arbitrariness of the investigating authorities, because of the mistakes of which the innocent were convicted, and the real criminal was never found.

Based on the story of the same name by Grigory Baklanov, which raises the problems of honor, conscience and human responsibility for what happens in our lives.

Vladimir Rudnev, a VGIK graduate, newsreel cameraman, and his assistant Sashenka, assistant director of the Moscow Newsreel Studio, are filming the Red Army's combat operations during the Great Patriotic War. Not everything works out at once - they have no experience yet. From the huge stream of newsreel footage shot in the line of fire, they patiently and courageously create a portrait of their contemporaries.
