In the midst of a civil war, a pair of former violinists in a tempestuous marriage oversee a farm on a rural island. In spite of their best efforts to escape their homeland, the war impinges on every aspect of their lives.

1813. The Swedish army is fighting in the War of the Sixth Coalition. The popular general Von Döbeln is arrested for sending the army against the French in breach of orders by the crown prince. At the court martial he is sentenced to death but is pardoned by the king and sent to prison instead. A group of conspirators are planning to set him free and make him their leader in a coup d'etat.

A group of Americans who live together in an old mansion somewhere in Sweden spend their time between working at the local airplane plant and hanging out with their revolutionary friends. Smoke has something going with his boss's daughter, but when the boss finds out, he has some dudes beat up Smoke. Director Hugo Berner and Doctor Olof Mellgren have come out of the theater where they have just shown the classic play Pygmalion. Director Mellgren claims that, like Higgins in the play, he can turn a harbor worker into the gentleman.

This is a Swedish remake based on The Scarf, the British original from 1959 (script : Francis Durbridge). The English script was translated to Swedish by Ulla Berthel and Börje Lindell. The Swedish version retains the English setting.
