Subhendu Chatterjee

Four friends from Calcutta who have very different personalities make a holiday excursion into the country, to a tiny village in the state of Bihar where they set themselves up in a bungalow. A series of minor events, all connected to their respective reactions to their new environment, reveals their characters more deeply.

Ashoke Gupta is an idealistic doctor working in a town near Calcutta. He discovers that the water at a popular temple is the source of an outbreak of typhoid and hepatitis. In order to save lives, he risks his career to try and call attention to this polluted water source, while a local group of building contractors attempt to discredit him in various ways.

The film documents one of the largest Indian religious fairs, the Kumbh Mela, which is held at the confluence of the rivers Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati. The action is seen through the eyes of Shubhendu Chatterjee who has come to the Mela not out of any religious sentiment but to see and understand people and seek the reason why “….multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining.” (Mark Twain after visiting the 1895 Mela)

This film is a complex family drama based on the theme of a mother's immense love and sacrifice. The plot is about a woman who is ill-treated by her husband and in-laws and is forced to abandon her newborn son. The son is adopted by a wealthy family and grows up to be a handsome young man (Prosenjit Chatterjee). The film explores the journey of the separated family members, the hardships the mother faces, and their eventual reunion, highlighting the profound bond between a mother and her child

The film is a family drama of Arijit, his wife and son. A bolt from the blue brings troubles to the peaceful household. During a tour in an accident Arijit's wife dies. This puts the family into a state of shock. But time is the greatest healer, they say. Arijit becomes a successful businessman but his villainous brother lands Arijit into a disastrous financial situation. Arunava loves a doctor Indrani. Suddenly it is revealed that Arijit's wife was not dead but had just lost her memory in the accident. She was in a ashram for several years. When she got her memory back she came to her house but here she saw Aparna. She was heart-broken and wanted to return to the ashram. Complications build up which are finally settled and the daughters-in-law return to their respective and rightful homes.

A young man still to find a place in the sun puts up an innocent bluff to a young girl he chances upon. They meet frequently since then. Bluffs continue to pile up. There is no way out. In a desperate bid the young man tries to break the wealth barrier. His friend, well placed in life, cautions him. He turns a deaf ear. The inevitable happens. The young man grows wiser but pays heavily for it.

Sagar falls in love with Jhilik, who is his maid's daughter. Things, however, take an odd turn when Subhankar, who wants his sister to get married to Sagar, plans to kill Sagar's father.

Bhootnath is an uneducated man but a good human being. Impressed by his good work, Binoy hires him as a caretaker. However, Binoy's daughter dislikes him and tries several ways to get him fired but later proposes him to marriage.

Kajol Chowdhury, a managing director, and Sagar, the chief mechanic at the Chowdhury firm, are always at loggerheads. A series of events bring them closer hinting at ending their mutual animosity.

She comes to Calcutta to her college friend, but as her home is not safe she takes shelter in the house of one Anjan Mukherjee. Though initially annoyed, Anjan, a bachelor and a music director cum singer from Lucknow, comes to empathise with Nupur. In this situation enters the great detective Bhanu with Jahar, his assistant, for by now Dr. Digambar Chatterji has declared a prize money of ten thousand rupees for finding his missing daughter.

After meeting with an accident, Payel falls in love with a man. Things turn when her father disapproves of their relationship.

A Hindu government serviceman comes to a Muslim colony along with his wife, daughter Mou and son Raju. His wife is an anti-Islam fanatic. There are lives Sirajuddin Mohammad loves Raju and Mou. Siraj had lost his own family, therefore he loves Mou and Raju as his children. Mou and Raju also admire and respect Siraj as their father calling him 'Abbajan'. ‘Preyashi’ is Sukanta’s story. Sukanta gives shelter to his father’s friend Bhudhar and his daughter Nandini. Sukanta and Nandini fall in love. Sukanta gets a job and goes out of station. But when he gets no news of Nandini and her father, he comes back and hears of Budhar’s death. Sukanata keeps searching Nandini but in vain. He gets transferred to Delhi where he catches Mr. Ganguly for corruption in railways. Nandini turns out to be Ganguly’s wife and begs Sukanta to set him free. Sukanta lies in court to save Ganguly. But he is shattered and becomes alcoholic. He meets Ranu, Nandini’s twin sister in Kashi who was forced into prostitution. Ranu falls in love with him. Ranu goes to Delhi to find her twin sister. But, Nandini cares for no one but her family. Sukanta overhears their conversation and decides to start his life again with Ranu.
