In 1916, Finland is still a part of Russian Empire. Eugen Schauman murders the governor of Finland, and his fellow activists take on smaller tasks in the fight for freedom.

Immersed in his research work, professor Reinhold Varavaara realizes that he has neglected his children's upbringing. He falls in love with his son Pelle's girlfriend Marja and becomes a laughing stock in the eyes of his family. The offended father sets out to discipline his ill-behaved children.

In this comedy set in an urban environment, a bachelor household unaccustomed to housework seeks a maid. Unbeknownst to each other, engineer Arvi hires Helvi, a music student, and Martti, a master's degree holder, hires Aili, also a master's degree holder. When journalist Salomon hires Manta as a maid, chaos ensues.

The self-assured manager Julius Särkelä maintains strict discipline in his office and at home, which is experienced by his daughter Saara and her suitor Martti, as well as the landlord Heroja, who is chasing his debts, and even the cat belonging to the patron Fallsten. Dr. Kosonen softens the stern leader by giving a speech at a party, which ultimately revolutionizes Särkelä's worldview.

A new steward, agronomist Paul, arrives at the Siltala estate. The self-assured steward causes tension among the gentry, especially among the estate's owner, Captain Lilli's widow. The flamboyant Lieutenant Hugo courts the owner of Siltala, but Lilli and Paul find common ground.

Poor high school students Toivo Päiviö and Unto Uramo solve their housing problems by enrolling in Sofia Andersson's boarding school. Toivo falls in love with Mrs. Andersson's deceased husband's niece, Aune, and begins to compete for her attention with opera singer Reino "Toreadoor" Kiljunen.

In 17th century Finland young Arvid is forced to marry Brita but their ways soon part when their respective fathers move to different places. Years roll by and Arvid grows up into a handsome and respected Thirty Years' War veteran known for his excellent fencing skills. However, he has fallen madly in love with a local maiden who does not reciprocate his advances, not to mention that his forced marriage to Brita is still valid.
