Janek and Halina came to the big city from the countryside in search of work. He works on a construction site. After getting paid, instead of meeting his fiancée, he goes out for vodka with his friends, who then drag him to street girls. The consequences of this misstep have affected Janek's health, and he is ashamed of his illness and seeks treatment from a quack. Halina's sister, Zocha, is expecting a baby, but her father's incurable illness causes the baby to be stillborn. Janek, distraught by Karol's tragedy, throws himself in front of a car. Fortunately, he does not die. Finally, he goes to a venereal disease specialist and undergoes treatment.

Disappointed with her life so far, Irena leaves her husband Zenon and leaves for Paris . He lives a free life there with his lover Duval. The millionaire Geist, her secret admirer, who insidiously led to the separation of her husband, being his false friend, learns about it. Desperate Zeno, who tries to commit suicide, enters the care of nurse Nelly, who also looks after little Tola; an emotional bond is born between them. Meanwhile, Irena, summoned by a millionaire planning a wedding with her, returns to Warsaw , where further complications arise between her, Geist, lover and husband.

Desiring to forget the torments of her past life, the girl agrees. In the countryside she meets Pawel, a simple country boy whom she seduces. The infatuated Pawel, to whom Franka reveals her past, marries her. However, the monotonous rural life bores Franka, longing for a big-city life, and when Pawel leaves for a few days, she escapes with a man she meets casually to Warsaw, where she leads the life of a cabaret chansonist. After a few years she returns, bringing with her an illegitimate child. Pawel forgives her and takes her back under his roof. But this is not the end of Pawel's ordeal....

Poor musician Alojzy Kędziorek is in love with Sagankiewicz's daughter Renata, who is reciprocated, but her family wants to marry her off to the wealthy butcher Baleron. Hipek, Alojzy's friend, sells his song to the theater director. The song becomes a huge hit. Alojzy is mistakenly locked up in a newly opened psychiatric hospital. He manages to escape. He goes to the theater where his song is being sung. He receives thunderous applause and an order for new songs. Renata's family agrees to her marriage to Kędziorek.

The niece of the older man arrives for a visit and gets into the wrong apartment. Complications arise.
