A well-regarded engineer in a big enterprise is hounded by trumped up attacks on his integrity when he delves too deeply into how bonuses are handled by the management. He gets into an argument with the guard, is arrested and subsequently fired. In the end Adam cracks under the prolonged pressure, waiting for the sound of an ambulance bringing a moribund patient whose kidney may be used for the transplant.

As Poland prepares for a presidential election, the country is consumed by political campaigning and media spectacle. Among the candidates is Jan Rydel, an outspoken and unconventional man who openly mocks the political establishment and refuses to play by its rules. Determined to put his principles into practice, he sets out to give away what he has accumulated, only to discover that helping people is far more complicated than he imagined. Warsaw, September 1944. On the eastern bank of the Vistula, a group of civilians live in a house cut off from the fighting across the river. They build replicas of the Enigma machines and manage to get two of the machines to the British and French code-breakers before the German invasion of Poland in 1939; they ask that recognition be given to their work at the end of the war. After the invasion, the Polish cipher bureau escapes and continues their decoding in Algeria and unoccupied France.

A family saga of Barbara Ostrzeńska-Niechcic and Bogumił Niechcic against the backdrop of the January Uprising of 1863 and World War I. The film is a rather straightforward and faithful adaptation of a novel by Maria Dabrowska with the same title.
