In a future time when middle-class, Stepford-type suburbanites have triumphed over individualists and non-conformists and made them prisoner, two vanquished but not defeated non-conformists carry on the fight as best they can.

A reporter looking into the death of a research scientist finds more deaths connected to the man, including some dubious "suicides". He discovers that the scientist may have been killed to cover up a secret government plot concerning mind-control drugs that have been tested on unknowing civilians, and he becomes involved with the scientist's daughter, who is trying to clear her father's name.

A surfer abandoned in the middle of the Australian Outback encounters an alien who time-travels in a ship that looks like a 1950s greasy spoon restaurant and embroils the hero in a chase that involves him sorting out a time paradox so that he can wind back time to prevent the Japanese winning World War II.
