Set in turn of the century Helsinki, author Arvo Helavalla's novel makes an indelible impression on adolescent Auli Ranta. She idolizes the author of a work that can never be forgotten.

Master Tuula Vihervo teaches languages ​​at a women's college, where American-Finnish Charles Thompson Jr arrives to do an inspection on behalf of his father's college donor. The arrival of a guest and Tuula's infatuation causes a stir inside the college and in a restaurant in Helsinki, where Tuula starts performing as the singer Irina Meller.

Louise Mareuil owns a perfume factory on the French Riviera. She is in a traffic accident with a sketch artist, Claude Dubois. She gives him a blank check which he soon use to withdraw 2 000 000 franc as a joke. Visiting her office, he returns the money and in return she hires him as a sketch artist for the company's advertisement. In 1916, Finland is still a part of Russian Empire. Eugen Schauman murders the governor of Finland, and his fellow activists take on smaller tasks in the fight for freedom.

The local doctor Aarno works with his nurse wife Asta. After the death of their child, the spouses have distanced themselves from each other. The man is completely immersed in the work, his invention of medicine, and the treatment of the outbreak of an epidemic for which the wife no longer has interest in. She is jealous of her husband's close work relationship with nurse Taina.

Baron von Sumers, owner of the Tottisalmen estate, sends his mischievous grandson Klaus to learn manners at the vicarage in the neighboring parish. Yrjö, the vicarage's farmhand, has an accident because of Klaus and ends up in Tottisalmen for medical treatment. When Yrjö's resemblance to the baron's missing son is noticed, events from the past begin to unfold.
