We are with Pasolini during the last hours of his life, as he talks with his beloved family and friends, writes, gives a brutally honest interview, shares a meal with Ninetto Davoli, and cruises for the roughest rough trade in his gun-metal gray Alfa Romeo. Over the course of the action, Pasolini’s life and his art are constantly refracted and intermingled to the point where they become one.

1820s Naples: On his death bed, King Ferdinando I tries to escape the ghosts of his bloody kingship by recounting his youth, when he was allowed a life of frivolity. However, then he was obliged to marry Mary Caroline of Austria, daughter of Empress Mary Theresa, in a political convention: unexpectedly, they became happy lovers, until court power games divide them, and a life-changing historical season arrived.

The life of Franca Malorni, exponent of the good bourgeoisie of the capital, suddenly changes when her husband dies suddenly. The woman begins to pour her attention on the three daughters, obliging them to have a Sunday lunch with their families.

On the outskirts of Naples during the Second World War, naïve 15 year-old Miluzza, subjected to repeated abuse by the men around her, is unable to escape the confines of her small village. After her mother's unfortunate death, she meets a wounded soldier and helps him return to his family's farm. He falls in love and wants to marry her but his mother insists on his betrothal to a virgin.

Cameras follow the citizens of Rome as they go about their days and traverse the city. At dawn, a man leaves home and takes the bus, while a group of Chinese people do morning yoga exercises.

A man wearing shorts leaves his house to go jogging with his dog. All around him, Rome struggles awake at dawn. A lengthy marathon from St. Peter's to the Appian Way, a single shot crammed with centuries of history, freak encounters, and a wacky, vivid sincerity.

Paolo Villaggio and Renato Pozzetto are the protagonists of various misadventures, first as nurses of a crazy ambulance, then as night guards of a shopping center and later as a pilot and stewardess of an air taxi. Next, they enlist in the foreign legion and then work as a Santa Claus in a Department Store.

The title deliberatly recalls the famous L'oro di Napoli (Napoli's Gold) by Vittorio De Sica (1954). Alike De Sica's film here Naples is the real protagonist: Naples and its dust, not its gold. Through five episodes expressing different aspects of Naples, we have a picture of the town that doesn't belong to the postcard stereotypes...

Luca, a young man from a rich family, travels to Rome. Here he encounters Gino, who makes a living with petty theft.

Giulio is a widower, struggling to raise three sons, Marco, Rudi, and Mimmo, as best he can. He lives in Rome's working-class Garbatella neighborhood and runs a wine shop with his two brothers. Lucia, meanwhile, comes from Milan's middle-class background; she's divorced and trying to rebuild her life with her two daughters, Eva and Alice. The two meet by chance and recognize each other: they had a fling as teenagers, many years earlier. Yet first love is never forgotten, and so Giulio and Lucia find themselves together again. Their meeting, however, changes not only the lives of a man and a woman, but also those of two families as different as could be. Two families who find themselves living under the same roof without even having had the time to get to know each other well.
