At the beginning he is greeted with suspicion and his efforts at courting the young ladies are futile. A poor woman in a Swedish farming community struggles to feed her large family and is torn by her passion for two different men.

The executioner became executioner against his will and the whore, only 17 years old, was forced into the brothel. This is the story of how the two meet and exchange cruelty with tenderness, guilt with innocence.

Depicts "Statarna", the Swedish agricultural proletarians, set during the early 1900s. An institutionalized brutality of oppression and poverty surrounded by a beautiful and silent countryside.
