After fleeing to the West in 1961, peaceful times were supposed to begin for the Striesows. But Irene longs for the familiar GDR, fears her husband Dieter's supposed "second wives" and expects the Third World War every day. When the war finally breaks out in the living room, her children Ute, Wasa and Flori decide to help their mother's happiness along, with unexpected consequences.

For 11-year-old Kattaka it's an escape: she's looking for her biological father, a Russian sailor whose ship is currently moored in Gdansk and whose existence her parents have kept secret until now. For 70-year-old Lena it's a journey back: back to her home in Masuren, from which she fled in the Second World War. And back to her suppressed pain of having lost both parents. Only together can the mismatched couple regain the ground beneath their feet, and themselves.

Ex-army soldier Harald Westphal moves into a larger apartment in Berlin-Neukölln with his second wife, their child, his two younger daughters from his first marriage, his son-in-law and his granddaughter. Problems soon arise with the multicultural neighborhood.

The fact that the terseness is sometimes applied a little thick, weight to a minimum.

When her mother dies in an accident, 17-year-old Jessy takes responsibility for herself and her two younger sisters. One day, her father Harald, a battle-hardened ex-military soldier who once left his wife and children for combat missions, turns up at the door. Accustomed to his own style of command, he finds it difficult to accept his new role as a househusband and father of three daughters and to empathize with the girls' emotional world. The children initially do everything they can to get rid of their father, who in turn doesn't like the fact that his eldest is having a fling with the class crush Sascha.
