A green mare makes the fortune of her owner, the horse dealer Haudouin. Shortly after his death, war broke out in 1870. One day, his neighbor Zèphe Maloret denounces Honoré, Haudouin's son, a maverick, to the Prussians. Following this denunciation, their non-commissioned officer enters the Haudouin home and rapes the mother while Honoré is hidden under the bed. The resentment already existing between the Haudouin and Maloret families turns to hatred... A letter recalling the events is lost, which doesn't help matters.

After receiving a mobster's heart as a transplant, a modest bank teller embarks on a life of criminal exploits.

Achille and Roméo, handymen at a casino, one day find a corpse at the bottom of the pool they're cleaning. Fearing they might be accused of murder, they hide the body, but it disappears.

Maroîs, the fairground bon vivant, spends most of his time around a bottle of wine, in the company of his friend Michaux, with whom he was once a sailor. He neglects his wife Monique, a pretty girl much younger than himself. Suffering from this indifference, she seeks imperfect and fleeting consolation, first from Michel, their friend's son, then from Jean-Louis, a young mechanic who has helped out with Maroîs' truck and won his trusting friendship. Michel, jealous, tells the showman of his misfortune. He leaves to kill his wife's lover. The latter, wishing to separate the antagonists, seriously burns herself by knocking over an autogenous welding block, which explodes. Taken to hospital, she asks for and receives her husband's forgiveness.

The Lourmel couple are taking part in the final round of a TV game show: the wife has to answer questions; if she fails, her husband drives a racing car to make up the lost minutes. Moments before the start of the show, a phone call informs Lourmel that her six-year-old son has been kidnapped, and that the ransom is the amount to be won on the game show.
