This stark Chilean melodrama concerns itself with the plight of slum dwellers living outside Santiago. For many years they have, with great difficulty, been faithfully paying small sums to a real estate man. This man has said that by doing so they can obtain title to the miniscule plots of land their houses stand on. In fact, he has been swindling them and does not even own the land he has been "selling." One of the aggrieved slum dwellers confronts him about this while he is visiting the slum, and the real estate agent shoots him before everyone's eyes. The question confronting these witnesses is whether testifying against this monster will make their lives even more precarious.

During the socialist government of Marmaduke Grove in 1932, a group of villagers decide to take some land in the area of ​​Palmilla. The thieves flee and hide out in disguise at the boarding school, where the school director helps hide them in exchange for the loot. While there, the thieves fall in love with the school janitor and rescue one of the schoolgirls from her boyfriend.

Alsino, a boy of 10 or 12, lives with his grandmother in a remote area of Nicaragua. But the war surrounds him. The US advisor takes Alsino on a chopper flight, but he's unimpressed. The soldiers' cruelties awake rebel sympathies in Alsino, and after an army assault backfires, the lad is fully baptized into the conflict.

Two thieves wander in the chilean desert and finally get to a small town near Bolivia. There, they try to include themselves with the townspeople but their instincts betray them and tragedy ensues. Based on a true story, this film opened one year after the chilean Coup de etat. The day after the opening, script girl Carmen Bueno and director of photography Jorge Müller were taken by police and now they are part of the list of the Desaparecidos.

The political evolution in Chile seeing from three different times: 1937, 1947 and 1970.
