Friday is the day that everyone goes away for the weekend. A bank clerk spends his weekend off a small island with his boat, but the weekend does not run its usual course.

With limited means to feed their families, the women of wartime Dalmatia turn to what they do have: the sea. After extracting salt by boiling sea water, they travel with their product, far inland over inhospitable terrain, to barter for food.

In June of 1942 Germans and their collaborators decide to get rid of partisans and their stronghold in the woods of Mount Kozara in Northern Bosnia. At a church in the country, eternally optimistic John marries Maria, his Atomic War Bride, as a war starts, planes buzz overhead and bombs start dropping. Though John is "mobilized" by the military seconds after the ceremony, he and Maria seek to be reunited.

Boris invites her to spend the night at his place; Segment "Čekati" (To Wait): Married students, Ivan and Sonja, live in an old woman's apartment. She is sick and the couple hopes that she will die soon, so that they may inherit her apartment; Segment "Poslije predstave" (After the Play): A husband and a wife lose the key to their apartment and have to spend the night in a hotel. The experience is wonderful and renews their feelings for each other, if only for a night.

The arrival of the first tourists brought unrest among the residents of the small, melancholic Dalmatian town. Some of them were tempted by the possibility of easy earnings, but besides mutual disputes, tourism also brought them encounters with people they were not accustomed to.
