In a small two-room apartment in a backyard in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, 14-year-old Ester lives with her father, mother, and older brother Carl. It is a typical working-class neighborhood of the time, and the apartment lacks any modern conveniences. Coal must be fetched from a dark basement where homeless people have sought shelter and lodging for the night. Ester is a dreamer. She wants to be a writer and secretly writes poetry. She often loses track of time and place when her thoughts wander.

Elise

In a sexual and romantic drama of intrigue, lies, and gossip, a young woman over a long period of time, has children by both men, her husband and lover before her deception begins to fall apart. Elise (Ann-Mari Max Hansen) is an outgoing, happy woman married to Henry (Ole Ernst), the town doctor. Because of a mix-up one day, she finds herself first compromised and then romantically involved with William (Henning Jensen), a captain of the Dragoons. Her story is told from the viewpoint of the town vicar, who may not be such an innocent bystander as he first seems. Eventually, gossip begins to run rampant, and Elise's life heads for a radical change.

Dummy Partner

The last part of the trilogy about the Vesterbro Root Per, which differs from "The Flight" (1973) and "Per" (1975) by being more comedy. Per has become socially adapted, he gets married and gets permanent work. In his rise live two originals, Kasper and his blind friend Holger, who are busy revealing housing fraud in the neighborhood.

Emma's Shadow

Emma (Line Kruse) is an eleven year-old only child from a wealthy Danish family. Emma's parents seem more interested in their own interests than in her. One evening when Emma overhears her mother talking about how tragic it must be to have your child kidnapped, Emma decides to stage her own kidnapping. She soon meets Malthe, a kind-hearted, child-like, naïve sewer cleaner who literally stumbles on to her. She convinces Malthe that she is a Russian princess whose family is being chased by Bolsheviks, so Malthe lets Emma stay with him in his very modest abode. After being "kidnapped" for a few days, Emma decides to return home. But, just as she is about to return, she overhears a couple of servants talking about how her parents don't seem to be very upset over her dilemma....

The Hour of Parting

A man is fired from his office job and at the same time he has a suspicion that his wife is cheating on him. The movie follows the desperate and dramatic reactions that the man makes up in his mind.

The Kingdom

At The Kingdom, Denmark's most technologically advanced hospital, a number of strange and otherworldly events begin occurring, much to the dismay of its doctors and patients. A ghostly ambulance appears and disappears, the voice of a little girl calls to a patient in an elevator shaft, and a doctor's fetus begins growing at an alarming rate.

After his girlfriend is killed in an automobile accident, a man decides the best revenge on those responsible is to murder their loved ones.

The Escape

The smart and modern Herbert, called Pop, has dropped out of the conservatory and lives as a jazz musician and womanizer. He bets Johannes that he can sleep with Elisabeth before 8 p.m. that same day, since all girls are the same. He wins the bet, while Johannes consoles himself with Solvei, the girl who lives downstairs and works in a grocery store. In the end, Johannes and Elisabeth meet on the stairs. Can they still find each other?

How to Behave in a Fourposter Bed

A police lieutenant woman goes undercover into a mansion where a couple maintains a school to teach young women how to catch a man... Especially if they are rich and into marriage. The courses include a number of disciplines, including judo and strip-tease.

Family drama set in the Danish countryside in the turn of the century. A wealthy landowner is an evil and corrupt womaniser with several illegitimate offspring in addition to his beautiful family. Nobody stands up to him except his feisty 17-year-old daughter.

Copper

After a stay in a sanatorium due to violent behavior during an arrest, Detective Karl Jørgensen is transferred to the fraud department. Here, Karl discovers a case involving his ex-wife and her new husband. When Karl begins to investigate the case, he is stopped by the police chief. Karl teams up with journalist John Bullnes. They gradually get closer to the truth, but are stopped when a suspect commits suicide. Karl is suspended and Bullnes is sent to Berlin on an assignment. Karl then takes the case into his own hands and arrests the city's mayor and a major contractor.

Ladies on the Rocks

Laura and Micha travel the Danish countryside performing their off-beat cabaret show. Their personal lives suffer as a result of their dedication to their craft, yet the chaos that ensues becomes the grist for their revue.

Oh, to Be on the Bandwagon!

This is a film about the stuff dreams are made of, yet, there is nothing elevated in this concept, on the contrary. The characters around the bar Strudsen (the ostrich) are doing what ostriches do, hiding themselves from the threats of life and keeping their dreams to themselves. Scriptwriter Benny Andersen being a poet is rendering a loving portrait of a number of persons, who fail to try to make their dreams come true, possibly not being sufficiently dissatisfied with their life after all. The manager would like a bar of his own but dare not admit to it, the butcher would like to be an opera singer, the window cleaner (sorry, window polisher) is secretly in love with the bar lady, but dare not show it and the pianist willingly listens to all the different dreams being presented to him. This film was the best accomplished movie from Henning Carlsen since his debut with 'Sult'.

One summer evening, two young people meet at the strait. He is Poul and she is Anna. They try to find their rhythm, but it doesn't really work out. In the middle of their experiment, a man appears, Karl. He is suffering from unhappy love and wants to drown himself. Anna and Poul part on bad terms. Poul prevents Karl from carrying out his plan and suggests he try the harbor next time. His unhappy love is named Lykke. She is a dancer at the "Go Go Happy Night" disco, owned by the tough Steffensen.

In Nørrebro, in a property ripe for redevelopment, only one family remains: the Hansens. With Elvis as the head of the family. A welfare recipient who, sitting on the sofa with a beer in his hand, can fix the whole world situation, and Herdis Hansen, the all-embracing wife who provides electricity for her husband's TV and strolls around in a fur coat "given" to her by their son Brian. Despite the king's bailiff Kjeldsen's countless attempts to evict the Hansen family, Elvis manages to fend him off every time. To get them to move, he is offered director Knudsen's new headquarters, a villa in an affluent neighborhood in Charlottenlund, as a temporary solution.

The Kingdom is the most technologically advanced hospital in Denmark, a gleaming bastion of medical science. A rash of uncanny occurrences, however, begins to weaken the staff's faith in science – a phantom ambulance pulls in every night, but disappears; voices echo in the elevator shaft; and a pregnant doctor's fetus seems to be developing much faster than is natural.
