In postwar Sweden, a gifted young pianist’s life is transformed after a tragic accident leaves him blind. Early in their relationship Ulla discovers that she is pregnant but she decides to get an abortion because she doesn't want to pressure Gunnar into marrying her. The outbreak of the war puts a strain on their relationship when Gunnar gets called up for military service.

Ulla thinks her husband Billy is boring and starts dating other men. Lillans husband Peter is having important meetings, including girls. Billy and Lillan decides to pretend to be in love, to rouse jealousy of Ulla and Peter.

Munthe has become a rich farmer through his own work and has gained some influence in the local community. He is strongly opposed to the immigration of east European farm labour from Galicia who, he claims, makes life difficult for the locals.
